How does the app decide I "know" a word?

You do. In Learn, swipe right (or tap the green check) when you know a word, left (red X) when you don't. Words you don't know come back later in the session. Marking a word known schedules a check for the next day; each time you get it right after a delay, the next check moves further out (3, 7, 14, 30 days and so on). Miss it and it comes back for review. Quizzes pull the overdue words first.

What does the percentage mean?

It's your progress through that language's 1000 cards: known cards divided by 1000, with milestones at 100, 300, 500 and 1000. It's a vocabulary count, not a proficiency level — understanding a language also takes grammar, listening and practice.

Where do the word lists come from?

Each language has 1000 cards focused on its most common words and useful forms, built from open word-frequency data and refined by hand. Corrections, related forms and example sentences are added with each update. Because the lists are honest to how people really talk, a few of them include everyday swear words; they are marked "(vulgar)" so you know.

Listen says a voice isn't available

Pronunciation uses the voices built into iOS. If a language has no voice installed, open iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, pick the language and download a voice. Enhanced voices sound noticeably better than the compact ones.

Can I change the language the app is in?

Yes. Settings → "I speak" lets you switch between English and the ten other languages at any time. Word meanings, menus and reminders follow, and English becomes a deck you can learn when your own language is one of the ten.

Reminders aren't showing up

Check that notifications are allowed for 1000 Words in iOS Settings → Notifications, and that Focus modes aren't silencing them. The reminder is a single local notification once a day at the time you chose.

I want to start over

Open a language, tap the menu in the top-right corner, and choose Reset progress. This only affects that language.

Does it work on more than one device?

The app works offline and keeps your progress on the device you use it on. Buying it once lets you download it on any iPhone signed in with the same Apple Account, but progress doesn't sync between devices yet.
